Presentation Outline
Demonstration of the relative positions and orbits of the Earth and Moon with respect to the Sun and explaining day and night, the seasons and the changing shape of the Moon. Some definition of terms i.e. Solar System, planets and moons, length of day, length of year and Lunar month.
A journey through the Solar System showing slides of the Sun and planets. An explanation that the Sun is a star and the source of energy for the planetary system.
The night sky is shown, adjusted for the date and location of the Presentation. The brightness and colour of stars is pointed out and an introduction to the naming of constellations given. Circumpolar ( The area of sky in which stars are visible throughout the year ) stars are picked out and constellations shown including: The Great Bear, The Little Bear and Cassiopeia. The method of finding the Pole star is demonstrated.
The historical importance of Polaris for navigation is explained and the starfield is then rotated to simulate the rotation of the Earth. End.
