Roman Culture, Myths and Legends

Presentation Outline

An introduction to Ancient Rome given in the stimulating and dramatic environment of the Starlab using slides and the Starlab Mythology projection cylinder which projects 45 constellation figures onto the dome.
The origins of Rome and The story of Romulus and Remus are discussed and slides of ancient Rome shown, including
sculpture, architecture, gladiators and soldiers.
The lights are dimmed and the northern starfield shown, at the latitude of Rome. The pupils are then asked to try to imagine what pictures and stories they would tell about the stars. The planetary gods are pointed out.
Many of the Roman stories derive from the Greek figures and their constellations. Some of the myths and legends associated with the major constellstions told, including Princess Andromeda and her rescue by Perseus; The Great Bear, Little Bear and Boõtes; Orion, Hercules and Draco.
