Greek Culture, Myths and Legends

Presentation Outline

An introduction to Classical Greece given in the stimulating and dramatic environment of the Starlab using slides and the Starlab Greek Mythology projection cylinder which projects 45 constellation figures onto the dome.
Key Stage 1and 2
The achievements of the ancient Greeks in art, sculpture, architecture and science are discussed and slides shown. The legendary Heroes, Gods and Immortals are identified and some of their Temples shown. The lights are dimmed and the northern starfield shown, at the latitude of Greece. The pupils are then asked to try to imagine what pictures and stories they would tell about the stars.
The Greek figures in their constellations are then shown and some of the myths and legends associated with the major constellations told, including Princess Andromeda and her rescue by Perseus; The Great Bear, Little Bear and Boõtes; Orion, Hercules and Draco.

 

Key Stage 2

The above but with more detail and an explanation that many tales and mythological figures had their origins in earlier cultures and were subsequently adapted by the Romans. Greek and Roman names of the Gods and planets are compared.
